    Ministry engages Journalists on Outbreaks

    Ministry of Health has advised Malawians not to panic with Marburg virus outbreak in Tanzania saying the country is on alert.

    Speaking at a media engagement on health related outbreaks including cholera, measles and Ebola Deputy Director of Community and Promote Health, Dr Kondwani Mamba, said government is strictly monitoring people across the borders, training the health workers and community awareness on the disease

    He has appealed to the public to report to any nearest health facilities when they come across someone suspected of suffering from a strange disease.

    Department of Disaster Management Affairs DODMA says more than 41,000 households approximately over 185,000 people have been affected by disasters since the onset of rainy season

    However Commissioner of the department Charles Kalemba says this update excludes damages caused by cyclone Jude which affected over 20, 000 people in 11 councils of southern region

    Kalemba says the department has reached out to over 85 percent of the total number of affected households with food and non-food items

    I will govern Malawi until 2030, Politicians to feel Pain-Chakwera

    President Lazarus Chakwera has said will continue governing Malawi until 2030 and politicians who want to come back to plunder public funds will feel pain

    Speaking during official opening of two day 2025 TEVET conference, Chakwera said leadership is a blessing and lazy people are thieves

    The president asked Malawians to work hard and not be handiclappers of politicians to earn quick money.

    He said every Malawian should take responsibility of ensuring that the 8.7 trillion kwacha 2025/2026 approved budget meets the nation’s development agendas.

    In his remarks, minister of labour, Peter Dimba, said government has increased enrollment in technical colleges from 2,500 in 2021, to 7, 500 in 2024 which shows the country has placed priority on skills development

    Employers’ Consultative Association of Malawi (ECAM) has requested government to rehabilitate dilapidated infrastructures in technical colleges and procure modern equipment.

    Speaking during the opening of the two day TEVET conference president of ECAMA Ann Chavula welcomed the introduction of new studies such as mining and sustainable energy

    Executive director of TEVETA Elwin Sichiola said Malawians should be happy because technical education is being provided to the youths in different areas

    Sichiola said in January over 9,000 students were selected to various technical colleges

  • 82 000 more households to benefit from MEAP – Mulimakwenda

    About 82 households are expected to be connected to national electricity grid by the end of June this year through the Malawi Electricity Access Project (MEAP).

    This comes after the Electricity supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) has procured various materials for the new connections which include poles, conductors, and 92,000 electricity meters.

    Speaking during a media tour at MEAP warehouse at Lunzu in Blantyre, ESCOM’s Chief Operations Officer, Eng Maxwell Mulimakwenda, called on all clients under the project to come forward and pay their connections fees as soon as possible.

    Mulimakwenda said customers who cannot afford the full connection fee of K93, 300 can pay a deposit of K17, 475 and settle the balance in installments after being connected to the grid.

    He has however warned customers against unscrupulous individuals who demand money to facilitate connections saying such cases should be reported to relevant authorities.

    MEAP is a five year project that was launched in January 2020 with an aim of supporting the government of Malawi to increase access to electricity in the country with financial support from the World Bank.

    Reserve Bank of Malawi RBM has announced new measures aimed at curbing inflation, boosting forex and promoting economic growth effective 1st July

    RBM governor Dr MacDonald Mafuta Mwale revealed during a news conference that central bank will implement changes that require all banks and other financial institutions to renew licences annually, comply with exchange control regulations

    Mafuta Mwale said all existing licences will expire on 30th June adding the initiative aims to uphold high integrity among forex traders

    He further said they are also targeting the use of telegraphic transfers for import payments where traders will be required to send their electronic copies to the central bank and Malawi Revenue Authority

    Malawi Liverpool Welcome Program MLW has revealed plans to extend its Journalist in Resident JIR Program to community radios

    This has been revealed during a graduation of JIR crew following a 2 year training

    According to MLW the program which will run concurrently with the national JIR will start with Chikwawa where most of MLW research activities are happening

    In an interview alongside the ceremony in Mulanje MLW head of policy unit Rhona Mijumbi said the program is designed to enrich journalists with science related knowledge for enhanced understanding and increased researcher-journalists interactions

    Mijumbi believes that the program has been beneficial to the outgoing crew and expects improved science reporting

    Speaking on behalf of her colleagues Britta Mpata described the journey as incredibly rewarding and transformative

    While lauding MLW for the initiative Mpata has requested it for continued engagements in order to provide the masses with relevant and up to date science related information

    Stakeholders take to task Roads Authority on Roads Rehabilitation

    Participants to a stakeholder consultative meeting have taken to task Roads Authority (RA) on its failure to rehabilitate important roads, substandard work and delay in completion of the projects by some contractors

     

    RA held the meeting aimed at gathering feedback on its 2025-2030 Strategic and Business Plan which outlines its mandate to provide a safe, efficient and sustainable road network

     

    In his response, RA Chief Executive Officer, Engineer Ammiel Champiti said the Authority has plans to rehabilitate all crucial roads and all contractors who perform substandard work are penalised by deducting their funds among other measures.

     

    Speaking at the meeting, RA Board Chairperson Dr. Matilda Matabwa stated that the Strategic and Business Plan is linked to key global, regional, and national policies

     

    In her contribution, Speaker of Parliament Catherine Gotani Hara called on the authority to ensure that roads rehabilitated and maintained in the country are 100 percent complete.

     

    Director of Roads in the Ministry of Transport and Public Works, Engineer Kelvin Mphonda, said that for RA’s new strategic plan to be fully implemented, it requires enough funding.

    MISA Malawi has launched iVerify Malawi Initiative which aims to counter fake news, misinformation and disinformation.

    Speaking at the event, MISA Malawi Chairperson, Golden Matonga said iVerify Malawi allows the public to report suspicious news for verification, ensuring that only accurate and factual information circulates

    Matonga told the gathering that as the nation prepares for voting and announcement of election results, misinformation is likely to be rampant with many false stories and damaging rumours that could threaten national peace and trust in electoral process

    UNDP Resident Coordinator, Fenelia Frost said misinformation is dangerous, especially in an election year therefore IVerify Malawi will ensure factual information is shared, making it an essential tool for Malawi during this critical period.

    She said iVerify Malawi platform will serve as a trusted fact-checking tool to help combat misinformation, prevent potential electoral violence, and maintain trust in the democratic process.

    Minister of Information and Digitalisation, Moses Kunkuyu emphasised the dangers of misinformation, particularly as Malawi prepares for its upcoming elections.

    He stressed that accurate information is crucial for national stability, urging the media and the public to be responsible in handling and sharing information.

    Minister of trade Vitumbiko Mumba has invited Kaunjika wholesalers and shop owners to a roundtable discussion on 26th March.

    In a press release secretary for the ministry Christina Zakeyo says objective of the meeting is to work out best strategies on the underlying issues affecting Kaunjika sector and establish a win-win situation between government and stakeholders

    Zakeyo says the minister has over the past weeks been holding meetings with different Kaunjika vendors associations from major cities and towns of the country to appreciate their concerns

    The Ministry has advised the Kaunjika importers and wholesalers to attend in person adding no delegation is allowed.

    One of Palestine fanatics in the country says Arab countries have failed Palestine in the ongoing Gaza conflict.

    In an interview with Radio Islam following the resurfacing of the Israel bombardment on Gaza earlier this week, while taking Qatar and Egypt out, Sheikh Muslim Abbas Vinjenje said Arab nations should have been at the forefront protecting Gaza rather than merely delivering speeches.

    Sheikh Vinjenje said as a serious action by now Arab nations could have imposed various sanctions on Israel to portray their solidarity with Palestine.

    He however cast doubt on the return of calm in Gaza saying Israel is being hypocritical for coming up with provisions that were not agreed upon in the ceasefire.
