    IHAM, PAC offer free surgery for 150 patients at ZCH

    Islamic Health Association of Malawi (IHAM) in partnership with Physicians across Continents (PAC) has pledged to continue offering free urology and general surgery camp.

    Speaking during a weeklong surgical camp underway at Zomba Central Hospital ZCH, IHAM executive director, Hajj Daitoni, says 17 doctors from England, Jordan and Palestine are assisting 150 patients with urology problems.

    Dyton says more than 75 surgeries have been conducted so far and IHAM plans to hold more camps to address the significant need for surgical services in Malawi.

    In his remarks chief urologist at the facility, Dr Wanangwa Chisenga, says the hospital continues to have a number of patients on its waiting list hence applauding IHAM for the camp.

    According to Chisenga people should develop health seeking behaviour when faced with persistent as well as recurrent urinary tract infections.

    He has reiterated the call to train more urologists to foster diagnosis and treatment of urinary tract infections.

    President Lazarus Chakwera has challenged acting judges of Supreme Court of Appeal to uphold rule of law and advance public good

    Chakwera made these remarks during the swearing in of the three justices namely Justice Rachel Sikwese, Justice Fiona Mwale and Justice Texious Masoamphambe

    The president says has appointed the acting justices to preside over a case which other judges have recused themselves to avoid their emotional conflict of interest from compromising its integrity

    Chakwera asked the new judges to guard their heart and take every narrative they hear with a pinch of salt because most people will tell them one sided story

    He encouraged the new judges to be courageous inspite the threats and dangers they face personally for doing the right thing for Malawi

    Several Parastatl Boards reconstituted

    Government has reconstituted boards of directors for various parastatal institutions whose tenure expired and appointed new members of other boards

    They include Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority MERA, National Food Reserve Agency, Blantyre Water Board, Northern Region Water Board, Small and Medium Enterprises Development and Council for National Herbalium and Botanic gardens

    Comptroller of the statutory corporations Peter Simbani says the reconstitution of the boards of directors is with effect from 6th, 11th, 13th and 16th April

    Simbani says government is confident that the newly appointed boards of directors will provide sound strategic leadership and effective oversight to enable the respective parastatals deliver on their mandates efficiently and in the public interest.

    Ministry introduces Reformed Hardship Support Scheme for Teachers

    Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education has introduced reformed hardship support scheme RHSS through which teachers working in remotest areas will be receiving 34,000 kwacha every month

    The Ministry says currently a total number of 1,537 public primary schools and 12, 624 primary school teachers are benefiting from the scheme.

    The secretary for education says this scheme is not attached to a teachers’ salary but remitted into their mobile money accounts

    Therefore, teachers who have been transferred from a remote to a non-remote school will no longer be entitled to this scheme

    Malawi’s first foods Africa Initiative launched

    Malawi’s first foods Africa Initiative aimed at addressing child food poverty and under nutrition has been launched

    Speaking during the launch deputy minister of health Noah Chimpeni said findings of the 2024 Malawi demographic health survey estimate that 76 percent of children aged 6 to 23 months live in food poverty

    Chimpeni said the recently approved national multisector nutrition policy for 2025 to 2030 places food systems at the forefront of addressing all forms of malnutrition

    UNICEF Malawi chief of nutrition Dr Charity Zvandaziva said government and stakeholders should ensure healthy and nutritious foods are available, accessible and affordable to all Malawians in the market

    Presidential Taskforce seeks Mpox Vaccine from WHO

    Presidential Taskforce on public health emergencies says is discussing with World Health Organisation WHO on provision of Mpox vaccine doses to the country.

    Co-chairperson of the taskforce Dr Alread Chalamira Nkhoma in an interview said at this point Malawi has not yet submitted the figure of the required doses as the situation is still being monitored.

    He however lamented few diagnostic sites as currently the services are only being provided in central hospitals and Public Health institute of Malawi Phim.

    He also adds the need to recruit more health workers who will help to conduct research and manage people with the disease.

    The country has now recorded 4 cases of Mpox disease since the first case was reported on 16 April 2025.

    The Drugs for Neglected Diseases Initiative has rolled out phase 2 clinical trial in Malawi and Tanzania to test new treatment for cryptococal meningitis which is a painful, deadly brain infection and second leading cause of HIV related deaths

    The Organisation says abrupt termination of Global Health foreign aid has placed millions of people living with HIV-65 percent of whom are in Africa at serious risk

    UNAIDS warns that these cuts could lead to 6.3 million additional AIDS related deaths in the coming years.

    In a press release the Drugs for Neglected Diseases Initiative says unlike the current cryptococal meningitis treatment requiring four daily doses the new formulation simplifies treatment to just two doses a day

    Senior communications manager for DNDI Edith Magak says the treatment also comes in an easy to administer pellet form that can be taken with water or via a tube crucial for critically ill patients who often arrive at hospital unconscious

    CDEDI asks Auditor General to release CDF report

    Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives CDEDI has given office of auditor general 14 days to release a report on how Constituency Development Funds CDF have been used in all constituencies across the country

    At a press briefing executive director of CDEDI Sylvester Namiwa says was compelled by Santhe creative youth empowerment Organisation which wrote the district commissioner for a report on the use of CDF in Kasungu south constituency from 2016 to 2025.

    Namiwa also demanded an audit of the voters’ data base to ensure that all names of eligible voters are intact in the voters register

    He says CDEDI has asked ministers of finance and local government to face the voters and tax payers on the assets they have accumulated in their positions through a program organised by the initiative in seven days time.

    Namiwa says President Lazarus Chakwera could lead by example as a religious leader in the fight against corruption

    He said Chakwera was supposed to congratulated the former director general of ant corruption bureau Martha Chizuma who has been appointed to a big position at World Bank.

    Chairperson of Malawi Electoral Commission MEC has held interface meetings with religious and traditional leaders in preparation for voter inspection and verification

    After holding the engagement meetings with leaders in TA Kaledzera and sub TA Nyambalo in Phalombe district Justice Anabel Mtalimanja said such gatherings are vital for the leaders to disseminate accurate information to the masses regarding the exercise

    Mtalimanja said the voter inspection and verification will correct all errors before publishing the voters’ register

    She said the commission has put in place digital mechanism where registrants can verify their names
