  • Gender Ministry commends women’s participation in the May 20 polls

    Ministry of gender and children welfare has commended participation of women in the May 20 tripartite elections.

    Principal Secretary of the ministry Dr Mary Shawa said this in an exclusive interview with Radio Islam.

    Dr Mary Shawa said if half of the women are voted into power on the May 20th challenges faced by the country will be solved.

    Citing examples of female politicians, Shawa said they have helped to solved some of the problems that the country was facing.

    Shawa therefore urged the aspirants to convince the voters to vote for them as there only eleven days left to the May 20 Elections.

  • Muluzi holds whistle stop tour in Zomba, urges people to vote for UDF

    United Democratic Front presidential candidate Atupele Muluzi has urged Malawians to find a lasting solution to the country’s economic challenges by voting transformative leaders.

    Speaking during a whistle stop tour in Zomba district, Atupele said Malawi has been a failed country it has been ushering into office greedy leaders.

    He said is not true that our neighbouring countries like Mozambique, Tanzania and Zambia are more advanced than Malawi.

    He therefore said it is wish of the UDF led government to transform the country into an economic independence.

    During the tour Muluzi visited Zomba Likangala, Zomba Chisi and Zomba Mtonya Constituencies.

  • PAC commends Malawian youth for resisting from violence

    As the countdown to the May 20 tripartite elections continues, the Public Affairs Committee PAC has commended youths in the central region for resisting being used as perpetrators of violence during this campaign period.

    PAC chairperson for the Central Region, Reverend Kuthyola Mwale, said this during a training for youths in Dowa.

    Rev. Mwale said during this period there has never been any reported case of violence in the central region.

    Mwale has meanwhile urged the youths to refrain from being used as violence perpetrators.

    Agness Maunde a participant at the two day training had this to say.

    PAC is expected to train youths from all the regions on conflict resolution, peace building and early warning with the financial support from United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

  • China dismisses US report about religious freedoms

    China officials have dismissed a United States report about religious freedoms in the country, saying Washington uses religion as an excuse to interfere in internal Chinese affairs.

    Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Qin Gang said in a statement that the report by the United States was full of false remarks and misled the public.

    Gang added that Beijing protects its citizens’ religious freedom according to law.

    He therefore, urged the United States side to discard bias and stop using religion to interfere in China’s internal affairs.

    The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) on Friday issued its annual report concerning religious freedom in China. 

  • Chikwawa advised to vote for People’s Party

    People for Chikwawa South constituency have been reminded to vote for the Peoples Party candidates in the area.

    People’s party aspiring candidate for Chikhwawa South constituency Illy Karim said this during a political rally conducted at Jessie Primary School ground in the area.

    Karim further asked people in the area to vote for him as the member of the parliament and Dr Joyce Banda as a state president.

    He also said people in the area should not forget the developmental projects which have been provided by him as well as the State President such as boreholes, school blocks among others.

    Karim said he is not worried for the forth coming polls because he knows that he did a lot before the campaign period.

    Chikhwawa South Constituency has seven candidates standing as members of parliament for the forth coming tripartite elections.

  • Lifuwu Police hunt for unknown thugs

    Reports indicate that Lifuwu Police Unit in Salima is looking for unknown thugs who stole a motor cycle from a South Africa National who is an internal audit manager for Kumbali Lake Resort in the area.

    Salima Police Public Relations Officer Gift Chitowe confirmed the development.

    Chitowe said a 49 year old man Karl Froise parked his motor cycle at the resort’s premises but all over a sudden unknown thugs who are believed to have a master key came and took the motor cycle away.

    He said when the police received the report they made a follow up and upon reaching Kapundi village in Traditional Authority  Kalonga the cycle tyre created a  puncture but they managed to escape, after seeing the police. Coming.

    Meanwhile, the police are calling upon motor cycle motor owners not to keep the motorcycles anyhow.

  • T/A Mpando express worry over Tsangano road delay

    Traditional Authority Mpando of Ntcheu district has expressed concern over the failure of government to construct Tsangano road.

    Chief Mpando was speaking at Sela Trading Centre  during the whistle stop tours which the Malawi Congress Party president Dr Lazarus Chakwera conducted  in the  area.

    He alleged that budgets have been passed for the road but nothing has happened up to now.

  • Ukrainian troops launches an offensive attack over pro-Russian protesters

    Ukrainian troops have reportedly launched an offensive against pro-Russian protesters in the eastern city of Slavyansk.

    Slavyansk self-defence forces said that Kiev government forces have launched a large-scale operation to retake the city, which is under the control of pro-Russian protesters.

    Mayor of Slavyansk City said two helicopters were shot down by pro-Russian gunmen, leaving one pilot dead and another one arrested.

    He further said several protesters were injured during the offensive, Interfax cited the city’s self-defence unit.

    Meanwhile, a city administration spokesperson said the Ukrainian army is putting up artillery around the captured TV station.

  • PODCAM calls for equal access opportunities to social services

    Parents of Disabled Children Association of Malawi (PODCAM) has urged people in the country to embrace children with various disabilities by creating access opportunities to social services as one way of attaining inclusiveness at all levels.

    PODCAM Executive Director, Miriam Namanja, made the call at Mangochi during a District Executive Committee briefing on the association’s activities.

    Namanja community members to open up to people with disabilities, particularly children so that they equally access their fundamental basic human rights thereby participate effectively in national development activities.

    She said it was the intention of PODCAM to ensure more children have access to education.

    PODCAM Executive Director expressed the need for proper handling of cases of abuse of children with disabilities.

    Namanja said the association strives at promoting and advancing the welfare of children with disabilities from the household, community and national level.

    Namanja, therefore, noted that early identification of disabilities in children was crucial to providing relevant interventions for their survival, growth, development and further assimilation in society.

    She however disclosed that the United Nations Children Fund recently conducted a national survey to ascertain the situation on the ground in an attempt to effectively address all the problems surrounding children with disabilities.

    According to PODCAM, there are over sixteen thousand and Mangochi alone has eight hundred and sixty three registered parents of children with disabilities.

  • NGO Gender Coordinating Network urges women to support each other

    NGO Gender Coordinating Network officials have urged women to embrace love among fellow women as one of mechanisms of achieving the 50-50 campaign.

    Chairperson of the organisation Emma Kaliya was speaking in Lilongwe when she opened the workshop which has been organised in conjunction with Gender Links.

    Kaliya said the programme is derailed by women themselves at some point.

    Meanwhile wp-content has been applauded for championing the 50-50 campaign.

    Dr Francis Chikunkhuzeni who is a Senior Lecture  at Polytechnic College said the wp-content has worked very well in promoting women in decision making positions.

    Dr Chikunkhuzeni said, currently 11 wp-content houses have main streamed gender in their programming.

    Currently, 262 women are aspiring in the forthcoming parliamentary race.
