    Young people in Phalombe have been urged not to vote for politicians who do not have youth oriented manifestos

    These remarks were made by executive director of Tisawasale Youth Organisation Gift Kasanga when he was revealing their plans to start orienting the youth on importance voting for someone who has incorporated them in their manifestos

    Kasanga said the youth are key to national development therefore must be involved in any political activity happening in the district

    He stated that the organisation will work with National Initiative for Civic Education, politicians and other electoral stakeholders to ensure young people are aware of their role before elections

    Political analyst Wonderful Mkhutche has challenged the youth not to sell their democratic right because of money

    Malawi tipped to fight hard to escape US Embassy Closure

    Malawi has been advised to fight hard so that it should not be listed among embassies which USA is intending to close.

    According to reports, USA is considering of closing nearly 30 embassies and consulates and over half of which are Africa countries aimed at cutting the budget by nearly 50% and reducing foreign aid by approximately 75%.

    But reacting to the development, one of the country’s economists, Edward Chilima, said the closure of embassies will have a great impact especially to the developing countries.

    Chilima said much as all are aware that poor countries will need USA in all endeavours so every effort should be made to negotiate the situation.

    He said there is a larger market for Malawi in USA therefore it is critical for Malawi to ensure there is a cordial relationship between the two countries.

    Ministry downplays Malawi-Tanzania Trade Animosity

    Ministry of Trade and Industry has downplayed the trade animosity between Malawi and Tanzania

    This has been said as the deadline of an ultimatum which Tanzania issued to Malawi over restrictions on imports of farm produce

    Through an official statement, ministry of agriculture in Tanzania said if Malawi does not resend its decision by Wednesday this week, Tanzania will retaliate by also banning goods entering and leaving Tanzania.

    In an interview with Radio Islam spokesperson of the Ministry Patrick Botha said the ministry has not received any communication regarding that matter through diplomatic channels.

    Botha declined to comment much on what Malawi government will do if Tanzania reacts that way

    Meanwhile, economic expert Adam Chipaka Gaisi described the situation as unfortunate for Malawi’s economy considering shortage of forex the country is facing.

    MHRC compiles Report on Judicial Institutions’ Efficiency Inquiry

    Malawi Human Rights Commission MHRC says is compiling a report on its findings following an enquiry on the effectiveness and efficiency of judicial institutions in Malawi.

    This followed complaints regarding numerous systematic challenges facing the judiciary which limit access to justice among many Malawians.

    In an interview with Radio Islam MHRC civic rights protection Officer Peter Chisi said the exercise which was conducted in Lilongwe, Mzimba and Mangochi was a success as people gave out their views on the matter.

    Chisi said so far some courts have started submitting feedback on the matter but MHRC is still waiting to hear from more.

    He however denied to reveal some of the findings from the courts saying that Malawians will hear from the report.

    Prioritise Welfare of Street Connected Kids-First Lady

    First Lady Madam Monica Chakwera has called on the nation to prioritize welfare of children, especially street connected kids as they are also a foundation for building a better Malawi.

    Speaking during commemoration of international Day for Street Connected Children at Kamuzu Palace, the First Lady described children as “a hope for the nation” and called on all Malawians to play an active role in securing their future.

    She said if the country wants a better tomorrow, it must invest in children today by protecting and including them

    The first lady commended various stakeholders for their continued efforts in advocating for child rights and creating safer spaces for every child.

    Deputy Minister of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare, Halima Daudi, has called for collective effort in improving the lives of street connected children in Malawi.

    Daudi said street connected children are among the most vulnerable groups in the society as they often face abuse, neglect and marginalization.

    The Deputy Minister also said that the Ministry is reviewing existing child protection policies to ensure they fully uphold and safeguard rights of every child

    UDF suspends Primary Elections, appoints Acting Regional Governors

    United Democratic Front (UDF) has suspended the party’s primary elections, made appointments as well as promotions ahead of the September 16 general elections.

    According to the letter signed by UDF’s Secretary General, Genarin Lemani, the decision has been made in the best interest of maintaining unity, order and strategic focus during the critical phase of campaign.

    Lemani has therefore instructed district and constituency committees to hold off any preparations, communications or activities related to the primary elections until further notice.

    Meanwhile, UDF has appointed some senior members to various positions of the party.

    In the letter made available to Radio Islam, the party has appointed Shabir Suleman, Kennedy Kuntenga, S. Kavalo, Samuel Chilembwe and Ireen Mwaiseni to the position of National Executive Committee.

    The party has also appointed some individuals to feel the position of Regional Governors and their deputies for Eastern, Nyika, Central and Shire Valley.

    Councillor for Likangala ward in Zomba has urged people living around Likangala evacuation centre to take care of it

    Munira Bakali made the remarks when members of Ngongomwa Community based organisation cleaned and planted trees around the centre to create shade and protection of the facility

    Bakali said many victims of disasters seek shelter at the evacuation centre hence a life saving facility

    She said the ward has managed to plant 20, 000 trees in the 2024 to 2025 national forestry season as planned

    Publicity secretary for Ngongomwa CBO Grant Ndau said the evacuation centre was in a bad state hence volunteering themselves to clean the place

    Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority MACRA says has named 6500 streets and 350 properties through its national addressing system NAS using 20 million dollars  

    Addressing real estate players during an engagement meeting director of postal and e-commerce Development Kondwani Kachika said NAS will improve security, location identification and national development

    Lead partner at Real Estate Talk Malawi Prince Matchika said NAS came at a right time to curb challenges faced in the identification of properties and streets

    Court jails Musician for abducting minor

    Mangochi senior resident magistrate court has sentenced a 23 year old musician popularly known as Bandera Wachiyao to three years imprisonment for abducting a 14 year old form 2 girl student

    The offence contravenes section 136 of the Penal code

    The court heard from prosecution officer Amos Mwase that on the night of January 2 2025 Bandera picked up the girl from Mpondas area for two days

    Appearing in court the convict who was represented by Counsel Patrick Debwe pleaded not guilty prompting the state to parade 4 witnesses who proved the case beyond reasonable doubt

    In mitigation he cited immaturity and asked the court to consider his youthful age and the potential to reform

    in his submission prosecutor Mwase emphasized that as a youthful musician the convict holds considerable influence and is viewed as a role model by many young people  therefore his actions deserved custodial sentence

    Senior resident magistrate Muhammad Chande therefore ordered Bandera to serve a three year jail term to deter others from exploiting young girls

    Ministry of Health declares outbreak of Mpox disease in Lilongwe

    Ministry of Health has declared that two cases of Mpox disease have been confirmed in Lilongwe district

    Through Public Health institute of Malawi the ministry says the first suspected case was reported by Bwaila Hospital on 20th March and the second on 9th April 2025

    Secretary for Health Dr Samson Mndolo says samples were collected from the suspected for laboratory investigations at National Reference Laboratory in Lilongwe and results came out positive on 16th April

    According to the Ministry Mpox is transmitted from animals to humans and humans to humans and characterized by fever as well as rash

    Dr Mndolo says children, pregnant women and people with underlying immune deficiencies and with multiple sexual partners have a higher risk of getting the disease

    There is no specific treatment for Mpox disease but the Ministry is advising the public not to panic as the situation is under control

    However it has cautioned the public to be on alert and take preventing measures as the disease has the potential to affect more people

    Mpox can be prevented by avoiding close or skin to skin contact with suspected or confirmed case, observing good hygiene among others.

    The Ministry says is working with Lilongwe district council, world health Organisation, Africa Centre for Disease Control and other partners to ensure proper surveillance, response and timely treatment.
